Let's Play: Tapes and Ladders!
With the removal of the Winnipeg transit buses and the introduction of a pedestrian space on Graham Avenue in 2025, the Graham Avenue Animation Project has taken over 14,000 ft² of streetscape for murals and temporary installations. The activation of pedestrian space aims to bring vibrancy to the city as people walk, bike, and spend time on Graham Avenue.
The project has 4 blocks of murals (Carlton St to Garry St), with artists contributing their personal styles. Each mural is approximately 1500 ft². Murals started in Summer 2025, with a refresh due in Summer 2026.
The design features an oversized classic snakes and ladders game, revised with architectural elements and tools in the spirit of Play as a firm, and play as a deliberate joyful action. The mural originally displayed a winding path, complete with side tasks that deter from the game, and a poster for instructions to play. In the repainting, the design was modified to the tapes and ladders only.
